Raymond Ernest Krouse, 88, of Westmoreland, Kansas, died Friday, July 27, 2012, at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan. He was a life-long resident of the area.
Raymond was born February 3, 1924 in rural Wheaton, Kansas, the son of Ernest and Mary Zabel Krouse. He attended local schools and graduated in 1943 from Westmoreland Rural High School. He attended classes in New Mexico to overhaul train engines and drawing engine diagrams, but due to his health, he returned to Kansas.
Raymond was a farmer and stockman. He operated the family farm southeast of Wheaton for 31 years, and then 30 years at his farm east of Westmoreland. He was very active in his community. He served over 30 years total as a school board member for Adams Creek, Westmoreland High School and Unified 323 school districts. For 32 years Raymond served on the Farmer’s State Bank Board of Directors. He was also a member of the Sherman Township Board, Pottawatomie County Extension Board, and the Farm Bureau Board. He was a 4-H Club Leader.
Raymond loved gardening, and spending time with his children and grandchildren, he especially enjoyed attending their sporting and 4-H events. Raymond married Greta Jean Sutterlin-Casey on November 28, 1948 in Manhattan, Kansas. She preceded him in death on May 16, 2006.
He is survived by his daughters, Judy Park and her husband, Noel, Manhattan, Mary Herrs, Westmoreland, Linda Kraushaar and her husband, Garry, Frankfort; his sons, Charles Krouse and his wife, Joy, Westmoreland, Richard Krouse, Westmoreland, Dean Krouse and his wife, Kim, Lenexa; daughter-in-law, Karen True and her husband, Gordon, Mason City, Iowa; sisters, Betty Berens, Topeka, Minnie Bradshaw, Phoenix, Arizona; brothers, Donald Krouse, Dale Krouse, Oscar Krouse and his wife, Jean, all of Westmoreland, Gilbert Krouse and his wife, Jeannie, Onaga and Richard Krouse and his wife, Joyce, Reading, Massachusetts; grandchildren, Kristin, Aaron, Gib, Kim, Brian, Tim, Lizz, Derek, Ryan, Bailey, Nathan and great-grandchildren, Ethan, Allie and Levi. He was preceded in death by a son, William Krouse and sisters, Agnes Whitworth and Eunice Ruse.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, July 30, 2012 at the Westmoreland City Cemetery in Westmoreland, Kansas. Reverend Phoebe Pitney will be officiating. The family will greet friends on Sunday from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Campanella-Evans Mortuary in Wamego. They suggest memorial contributions to Pottawatomie County 4-H Foundation or the Westmoreland United Methodist Church and those may be sent in care of the mortuary.
