The Rock Creek Mustangs came from behind to win the Backyard Brawl by a point on Friday night, 28-27, but the Red Raiders showed they had some explosive talent for this season.
The Mustangs were able to post the first score on a 62 yard rushing touchdown from Ben Commerford. The second score belonged to Wamego, as Marshall Wethington completed a pass to Brandon Ebert for an 82 yard play. Rock Creek rounded out the first period with a 10 yard Dylan Myer to J.T. Weers touchdown pass.
At the end of the first quarter, Rock Creek had a 14-7 lead.
Rock Creek also scored first in the second quarter with a Josh Roberts five yard TD. But Wamego fired back and scored twice. Once with a Wethington 10 yard scamper and the second time with a four yard toss to Kameron Quinn.
Wamego was up 21-20 at the half.
The Raiders had the only score in the third period, a long bomb to Dakota Turner that put Wamego up 27-20.
However, the Mustangs had the last scoring with a Brett Hammett pass to Brandon Lutgen that closed the gap to 27-26. Rock Creek iced the game with a 2 point conversion.
