The Rock Creek Debate Team parted ways this weekend, with some going to the two day tournament at Shawnee Heights High School in Topeka and the others going to the one day tournament at Osage City. The three novice pairs at SHHS all finished with 3-2 records. However, their records do not accurately reflect how well they did. On Saturday morning the group had some travel problems, and missed the first round, having to forfeit. “It was a tough break. Actually, the pairs went 3-1. Casey Helget had a really good outing, finishing with three one’s out of four rounds,” said Coach Miller. Casey teamed up with Dakota Nelson, while the pairs of Hayden Schlochtermeier and Lyla Lenauer, and Alex Feldkamp and Nate Berard, also participated.
At Osage City, the team went 13-2 and finished in first place, one win ahead of Tonganoxie and two ahead of Lawrence Free State. The pair of Jacy Johnston and Rachel Forrester went 5-0 with 18 speaker points to win the top medals. Chance Maginness and Dani Rakowitz went 4-1 with 18 speaker points to win third place, and Wyatt Fouts and Mckenzy Umscheid went 4-1 with 20 speaker points to finish sixth. “It was a fun day. The kids were in good spirits. We really enjoy going to the Osage City tournament. It is really well run,” said Coach Miller. “Taking first as a team and having three of the top six pairs didn’t hurt either.” Also participating for the Mustangs at Osage City were Amanda Del Toro and Christine Thompson, who went 3-2, and the novice pair of Rachel Askew and Emmalee Funk, who went 2-3. Next week the squad travels to Salina to participate in the Sacred Heart Open.
