Elvera R. Kufahl, 87, of Wheaton, Kansas died Sunday, November 25, 2012, at the Westy Community Care Home in Westmoreland, Kansas. She was a life- long resident of the Wheaton community.

Elvera was born April 20, 1925, on a farm northeast of Wheaton, Kansas, the daughter of Frank A. and Freda C. Honig Marten. She attended the Pleasant Hill school, Duluth Lutheran School, and then completed her secondary education at Wheaton Rural High School, graduating in 1942.

Elvera was married to Vernon Lee Kufahl on June 9, 1944 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Duluth, Kansas. He died March 28, 2009.

Mrs. Kufahl worked for the Force Telephone Company in Wheaton for several years after graduating from high school. She worked part time for the Wheaton Mercantile from 1965 to 1984. She then worked with her husband, Vernon, at the Kufahl Hardware Company and Kufahl Funeral Home until 2006 when Alzheimer’s disease limited her ability to work. She entered the Westy Community Care Home in March of 2008 where she lived until her death.

Elvera was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton and the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League of the church; she was also a former Sunday School teacher. She was a long time member of the Jolly Friendship Club.

Elvera enjoyed taking trips with Vernon and watching their children and grandchildren’s sporting events. Elvera had a great sense of humor that touched many people’s lives and even though she had Alzheimer ’s disease later in life, she still found ways to make people laugh or smile. Most importantly, she was a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother. She shared her passion for God’s word with all people in many and various ways.

She is survived by five children; Lavon Sanford and her husband, Mike, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Dale Kufahl and his wife, Corlene, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Jonetta Roy and her husband, Steve, of Denver, Colorado, Lonnie Kufahl and his wife, Katie, and Randy Kufahl and his wife, Kari, of Wheaton, Kansas; 21 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, November 30, 2012, at St. Luke Lutheran Church in Wheaton, Kansas. Reverend Terry DeGiovanni will be officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Luke Lutheran North Cemetery. Mrs. Kufahl will lie-in-state Thursday at St. Luke Lutheran Church from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The family will greet friends and relatives from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the church where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. They suggest memorial contributions to St. Luke Lutheran Church or to the Lutheran Hour, and those may be sent in care of Kufahl Funeral Home.
