Edward Dean Stevens 58, of rural Belvue, Kansas, died Sunday, December 30, 2012, at his home following a battle with cancer. He was a life-long resident of the area.
Ed was born January 20, 1954, in Manhattan, Kansas, the son of William E. and Laurine Schmanke Stevens. He attended Maple Hill Grade School and Graduated in 1972 from St. Marys High School. Ed then attended North Central Vocational Technical School in Beloit, studying farm mechanics.
Ed was a life-long farmer and rancher. He owned an operation south west of Belvue. He was a member of the Kansas Livestock Association, the National Cattleman’s Beef Association and the Wabaunsee County Farm Bureau. Ed was a steward of the land and received many awards from the Wabaunsee County Conservation District. He loved anything outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.
Ed married Janice Hammarlund on February 14, 1987, in St. Marys. She survives at their home.
He is also survived by his mother, Laurine Stevens, Wamego; his brother, Gary Stevens, rural Belvue; uncle, Frank Stevens, Phoenix, Arizona; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Hammarlund, St. Marys; and a brother-in-law, Ray Hammarlund, Wamego. He was preceded in death by his grand parents and father.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 4, 2013, at Campanella-Evans Mortuary in Wamego. Burial will follow at Wamego City Cemetery. Mr. Stevens will lie-in-state starting at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. They suggest memorial contributions to the Ed Stevens Memorial Fund to be designated by the family at a later time, and those may be send in care of the mortuary.
