Russel “Dean” Taylor
WESTMORELAND- Russel “Dean” Taylor, 91, of Westmoreland, Kansas passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at the Westy Community Care Home.
Dean was born in rural Louisville, Kansas on January 15, 1922, the son of Phillip “Wiley” and Laverne C. (Travis) Taylor. He attended West Union Grade School. On January 2, 1942 Dean married Lois Plummer, they later divorced. On February 11, 1982 Dean married Edna Mae (Reves) Mayer. She survives of the home.
Dean worked for Bayer Construction for over 15 years before becoming the Pottawatomie County Sheriff in 1969. Dean served as the Sheriff for 20 years before retiring in 1989. Dean loved sports. He enjoyed golfing and fishing and loved the game of baseball. He also loved attending any Rock Creek ballgames.
Dean is also survived by one son: Ron Taylor and wife Geneva, of Blaine, KS; one daughter: DeAnn Taylor of Kansas City, MO; two stepsons: Darrel Mayer and Duane Mayer and wife Cathy both of Wamego, KS; one stepdaughter: Donna Smoller and husband Tom of Overland Park, KS; one brother: Bill Taylor; one sister: Rita Snapp; seven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Dean was preceded in death by two brothers: John and Crawford and two sisters: Rose and Helen.
Funeral services for Dean will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 18, 2013 at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. Burial will follow at the Westmoreland Cemetery. Dean will lie in-state beginning at 12:00 p.m. Sunday February 17, 2013 where a visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m., all at the Stewart Funeral Home of Wamego. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Dean Taylor Memorial Fund, to be designated later and may be left in care of the Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, Wamego, KS 66547.
