Marie M. McCormick, 104, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, formerly of Blaine, Kansas, died January 16, 2013 following a short illness.
Marie was born in 1908, in a stone house built by her grandfather on the family farm near Blaine, Kansas, the second of eleven children to John and Mary Moran. She attended rural schools and graduated from St. Columbkille’s Catholic School in Blaine as Salutatorian.
Marie married William A. “Bill” McCormick on January 30, 1929 and moved to the McCormick family farm. In 1948, they sold the farm and moved to Albuquerque. They were married for 52 years and Bill preceded her in death in 1981.
Marie worked as a nurse’s aid, then attended business college where she took accounting and secretarial courses. She worked for several businesses in Albuquerque until her retirement in 1973. She was a member of St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church in Blaine and then a founding member of St. Therese of the Infant Jesus Catholic Church in Albuquerque. She also was a member of the Theresian’s Christian Women group and Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Santa Maria. Marie was a very active person and refused to let health issues get her down. She enjoyed walking and in later years exercising at the rehabilitation center. She also enjoyed luncheons with friends and playing cards and dominos with family and friends. Marie was an avid reader. She said the secret to her longevity was healthy food, exercise and not worrying about things she could not change.
Marie is survived by her daughters, Marita Roeder, Wheat Ridge, Colorado, Dolores Frank, St. Anne, Illinois; son, Hugh McCormick and his wife, Patricia, Aurora, Colorado; daughter-in-law, Tonia McCormick, Albuquerque; sister, Patricia Harrington and her husband, Louis, Blaine; eleven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson and numerous nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Mary Gene, son, Patrick (Gerry) McCormick, granddaughter, Siobhan Erin McCormick and nine siblings.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 6, 2013, at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church in Blaine. Father Pat Sullivan will be the Celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery. The family will greet friends at a luncheon following the services.
